The walk and now the run, both in the same year. A stylized cyberpunk dystopian version of Death Race meets Gamer meets The Purge Anarchy (..and of course The Hunger Games) with Edgar Wright’s trademark playlist curated specially for OTT divers and a hit and miss allegory for the topical- bread and circus, one percenters, technofeudalism, paid corporate media and the attitude of winner takes it all with an endless diet of popular reality tv entertainment slop presented by charismatic clowns.
An overall fun action flick with jam packed testosterone-filled badassery that at the same time paradoxically makes you wish for Wright one day reverting to his glory days of low-budget British comedy preferably with Pegg and Frost, leaving these content creating big studios begging and crying for another Stephen King adaptation.
A movie that will piss the f*** out of you and yet you won’t budge from the edge of your seats. Highly entertaining to the point you might shout at the screen- “You’re The Man!!” and to top it off, The Running Man shouts back at us, the audience- “You’re the fu**ing losers. Chumps!!” The problem is the denouement, it felt as disjointed from the narrative as it is from reality. Too much optimism and solution-oriented. They should have instead stopped at the climax and followed V for Vendetta to the letter.
P.S.- Long live Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. I enjoyed The Running Man more than I thought I would. Glen Powell shows he definitely has it in spades what it takes to be an action hero, both in aesthetically showbiz and philosophical sense.
