Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
"Hot Take- What I anticipated and was promised by George Miller and not got delivered by Furiosa I got to a greater extent with Kingdom of The Planet of The Apes. Here is a list of 10 things Kingdom delivers-1. This standalone sequel says more about the current fractured socio-political landscape of a divided US than Alex Garland's Civil War. Two different sides trying to capture the narrative by interpreting the Founding Father's vision in their own preferred ways…"
The Nightingale
"What starts as a lullaby must end with a bloodbath in a world where revenge is the age-old force of nature and the only equalizing force. Acclaimed Australian director Jennifer Kent presents a no-holds-barred approach to showcase unrestrained inhumane treatment meted out to women and the indigenous in the form of blood-curdling brutality as a metaphor for taming the wilderness of the uncharted new world and a complete apathy to horrendous degree of violence. Although The Nightingale is no "The…"
Joji
"With a son like this who needs a historical recollection of Ajatashatru. It is not the first time a new rendition of Macbeth has been adapted to the screen since the play itself has been here for the past four hundred years and Joji definitely has those Macbeth tinged elements especially with its characters that defined the famous play written by Shakespeare but what makes Syam Pushkaran's writing different and special is its grounded approach in a everyday sort of…"
Jal Tu Jalaal Tu
"Never thought the interminable ringing of an office call bell can be this much maddening that it started to feel like needles piercing into my brain. How a simple act of natural human instinct can inadvertently be taxing and can snowball into a life-changing upheaval when the genuine feeling of being happy for other people gets vanished in the quagmire of hectic strenuous setting and work overload that reduces fellow humans into automatons without considering the basic decency they may…"
Fright Night
"The Last Temptation of The Count...The same year in an alternate dimension when Marty McFly instead of going to Doc Brown accidentally gets mixed up with some bad apples. Coincidentally, a young Christopher Lloyd lookalike Stephen Geoffreys also plays an amateur-level gadget-savvy bozo who is not the smartest egg in the basket. Back when Hollywood was on the verge of severing its ties yet not quite over with its Mid-Atlantic accent but open enough to experiment on a long…"
The Taste of Things
"Equal parts bucolic and melancholic. One part of the world experiences summer while at the same time in other parts autumn reigns. Dovetail that into the hearts and you got yourself The Taste of Things. A movie that is mostly atmospheric and about the so-called vibe when it could have been a little bit more about the characters who inhabit it. Long expressive dialogues about recipes, dishes and dreams, a touch of the surrounding meanwhile Taste of Things speaks very…"
Unfriended
"Now I know how a hangover must feel like inside a Gen Z's head. If this movie was a dig at the jock and diva culture that is rampant in American schools, then things would have been really interesting but since it's not and it is about a much more serious issue which has been plaguing adolescents and teenagers, the whole shock value it tries to encash turned a promising concept into a snuff film. Very quickly it started showcasing…"
The Clovehitch Killer
"BTK, The Shoe Fetish Killer and The Golden State Killer, all of their dress rehearsals in one movie. I have read and seen this approach of roundabout methods of implementation of this particular kind of murder mystery investigative procedural quite a few times but almost all the time it fails to pull off, except one or two. Even Stephen King failed at this, for non-spoiler purposes I am not gonna mention which of his work the movie resembles. But, The…"
Idiocracy
"This has got to be the dumbest thing I have watched in a while. The sad part is the creators came out pretending like they were going for it exactly for that reason and the message was loud and clear, but did it have to be this particular way?"
A Fish Called Wanda
"I bet I can hear someone whinging somewhere- "They don't make capers like these anymore."I regret not watching it during my college days. But, at least I did it while the main cast are still alive. Easily one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. Both Kevin Kline and Jamie Lee were unhinged and wacky in this Guy Ritchie-style movie 22 years before Snatch would hit the theatres. I haven't laughed this hard since I watched They Cloned Tyrone last year."
Aattam
"What if Sidney Lumet had directed Women Talking? Or maybe Shirley Jackson's The Lottery was adapted to screen with a contemporary element rather than a horror one. Except Aattam takes 12 Angry Men the classic and cranks it up to the highest notch possible by throwing a woman into the mix. And that too a remarkable Zarin Shihab who stood out with her performance despite having a much shorter screen time. The simple title aptly encapsulates the premise and the…"
Aamis
"A story in search of intimacy by a wife to fill the void of loneliness in a loveless life. That is in the most unconventional sense. Just when I thought I was familiar with the usual prevailing love stories in Indian movie industries, Bhaskar Hazarika pulled a fast one. A breathtakingly gorgeous and talented Lima Das indulges in concupiscent carnivorous dreams in an all-consuming taboo lovestory. I can't believe I had no idea about the fact that we actually beat…"
Reptile
"Jeez, get to the point already or do us a favor in the first place and name the movie- Turtles. I guess the debut film-maker was going for some sort of L.A. Confidential re-enactment, but except for Benicio's intense cold stares I got nothing."
Rushmore
"Alright. Now we know why Ben Shapiro is the way he is. "War does funny things to men... "Saved by a margin from becoming the origin story of Anakin Skywalker. Effortlessly funny yet a serious depiction of longing for love, social connections and coveting leadership position in a community, weird characters with quintessential Anderson-style eccentricities. One additional star for a superb selection of soundtrack."
Crew
"So, is this how we are gonna extradite the Sith Lord of India? Over-dramatized caper and tonally uneven historical subversion by exacting fictional justice on a fraud billionaire airline mogul. A little bit of fun but mostly a drag, over-the-top performances by veteran actresses so much so that Kriti Sanon comes off better than Tabu and Kareena. Straight into the first act within thirty minutes there were like five different product placements and five different old classic remixes and they didn't even try to be subtle about it."
The Watchers
"A cheap amalgamation and a hodgepodge of The Maze Runner, IT, Fringe the TV show and the more recent No One Will Save You with a dysfunctional found family in the mix. Say what you will, about those teenagers over there at The Glade, compared to these lemmings they seemed like The Losers Club. The smartest egg in the basket was the yellow bird. Mythology, folklore and legends meet Zoo Hypothesis, Fourth contact, shapeshifting and replacement. A shoddy screenplay with an excessively prolonged denouement that sets the stage for a possible series like that of the Eastrail 177 trilogy this time by Jr. Miss Shyamalan."
In a Violent Nature
"Just another typical plain day for Shudder. I never thought I would appreciate the surrounding greenery and foliage, sunrise and sunset on the horizon as well as howling breeze, birds chirping and insects trilling and screeching in the background more than the tracking shots following Jason, excuse me Johnny about to slash some damsel teenagers. Unconventional voyeuristic camera placements with weird jarring yet unsettling static wide-angled long shots. But, maybe the most shocking aspect here is how ironically funny it is at several places despite the grotesque violence."
Alone
"Same unoriginal worn-out thriller formula that has already been done to death. This whole trope of finding new-found respect for life by getting rid of something sinister from the world while overcoming past trauma has to go. Hollywood has reached its saturation point long ago."
