Black Warrant
"A tv show India has been in dire need of. This very Kafkaesque crime drama thriller is as eye-opening as they come and reflects what French philosopher Michel Foucault once conveyed in his book Discipline and Punish: The Birth of Prison that prisons were not born out of some moralistic, humanitarian cause for reforms rather because of humans' innate hunger to exert power over fellow beings. Motwane did it again. Black Warrant is most probably the most hard-hitting show I…"
Anora
"For some reason, Hollywood decides to portray the Russians not as bloodthirsty mercenaries or dangerous mafia or scheming espionage operatives rather as goofballs and entitled Americans and the result was hilarious. The only man with any semblance of the Russian stereotypical features was actually the only sane man in the whole thing. Never would have imagined a Sean Baker movie that has this much humor, yet an ending so devastating, cynical but also too real."
Flow
"Blending animism's mythology with stoic philosophy, Flow works its way through the idea that maybe a feline apostle would be just the thing the universe needs when it's been going through a tectonic collapse (literally in this animated movie and metaphorically in the real world) . No need for Noah or Markandeya to build an entire arc. Ecstatically gorgeous imagery with a peaceful as well as chaotic demonstration of the randomness, indifference and companionship to endure all that's in the way. Thank you, Latvia."
The Lure
"Finally an answer to the question- "Top half fish or bottom half fish?""
Ghostlight
"Hardest part is the first line. All downhill from there. I didn't know there were two Sing Sing movies last year. Except Ghostlight has the dry invective-laden humor that was missing from Sing Sing and the latter one was much calmer. This one has waves of sentiments, it hits you and then recedes only to inundate you again. A heart-pouring account of how grownups always believe the little rebellious ones are the only problems and downplay their own participation thereby…"
A Real Pain
"A journey emphasizing isolation, mendacity and how crushing life can be and the travelling duo are an impressive Kieran playing Kieran and Jessie playing Jessie. What amplified the whole experience was what Eisenberg chose as the backdrop, one of the most appalling and grotesque tragedy befallen humanity. A Real Pain is simple, grounded and very relevant in today's time when previous generations happen to believe that millennials and Gen-Z have everything compared to them, yet they are lost, entitled and…"
The Seed of the Sacred Fig
"In the name of Masha Amini, Nasrin Sotoudeh, Roya Hesmati..... And Director Rasoulof who had to flee after getting sentenced to 8 years. When hushed breath, whispered tone and stifled laughs poured into the streets in protestation, all because the hair wanted to fly with the wind and apparently it's too much to ask. Mohammad Rasoulof's The Seed of The Sacred Fig, in its essence is a microcosm of what's it like to live under a theocratic autocracy where even…"
We Live in Time
"Florence Pugh implores you to question yourself how many lives is it possible to live in just one life. A Slice of Life. Looking at a photo album of the most wonderful pair through thick and thin. Pugh is the GOAT in the making. A poignant home video spliced and cut into other home videos in which life as we know it can be seen slipping like sand through fingers really fast, like an hour and forty minutes fast. Love…"
Soft & Quiet
"A low-rent cutscene from American History X that Nick Fuentes could use for his leisure. I was shocked to see how class-diverse this lot was, from teacher to store manager to ex-convict and whatnot. Hand-held camera for effect and loud acting choices that were borderline ridiculous, this provocative movie escalates fast and changes its tune rapidly to an unbelievable proportion. But, mostly it feels tremendously exploitative while depicting a serious situation revolving around an age-old problem that has really mushroomed lately. The characters felt cut out of cardboard and the entire thing seemed ham-fisted."
My Old Ass
"If self-help gets this much literal, instruction-based and full proof, maybe I am down for some Rhonda Byrne. A tribute to the people who misguidedly but full of hope wish that someday their obituaries are gonna read- "No Regrets". And so much as we think that older folks have gotten everything figured out, sadly they don't. After CODA, Eighth Grade, The Edge of Seventeen, Booksmart etc I guess it's natural to feel a little underwhelmed when it comes to these kind of movies."
Censor
"A vision board for investigative agencies to recreate hyperrealistic crime scenes An underappreciated horror thriller that makes you go down the eerily unsettling nightmare of a rabbit hole deep into utter madness through those uncharted caverns of the brain. Censor is a steady display of insanity based on the application of that Emile Durkheim quote- " All forms of deviancy are simply a challenge to the normalised repressiveness of the State.""
Nightbitch
"Beware of the metaphorical canine that came out of the wilderness and got domesticated.Lois Lane runs like the wind in this psychological body horror. Amy Adams lets her intrusive self take the wheel in this messy magical realism of a story about womanhood, postpartum toddler developmental stage with no chill that gives away too much and leaves too little to the imagination. Or is it just an awareness campaign for Clinical Lycanthropy? I don't think even the director is…"
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish
"Heavy on the fairy light on the tale. A middlingly worthy sequel that is as much about the sidekick and supporting characters as it is about its protagonists and their flaws symbolizing one life is enough to make a dent or in this case a scratch but with familiar devices that have been in use ad nauseam. Wacky anthropomorphized animals and the one true formidable adversary."
Puss in Boots
"Holy Frijoles! Pirates of The Caribbean mixed with Mad Max for cat lovers with the same silliness and adventure barring the sea or the sails or the roaring machines and the mutants with age-old fairytales and parables sprinkled around. Badass Banderas as a feline bandit. Puss In Boots delivers one of those rare mediums for exposition in a deliberate yet hilarious manner. Even in an animated movie, Banderas is a Casanova and doesn't forget to misremember the name of his squeeze from his one-night stand. But, all things considered and given the circumstances that's a good kitty kitty."
Kishkindha Kaandam
""Which would be worse, to live as a monster, or to die as a good man?"- Shutter Island. This devastatingly heart-wrenching mystery drama although overcooked in its third act and takes quite a bit of inspiration from foreign materials and if given enough attention, the looming twist can be deduced from a mile, whether because of the clue/motif/easter egg (whatever you wanna call it) attached to the title itself or in case one is familiar with the works of Dennis…"
Conclave
".... And here I thought I would never see the day a room full of old men would go radio silent when suddenly a group of women appear, contrary to my exactly reversed personal experience. The chalice, the power and the shenanigans equipped with cloak-and-dagger that follows for the coveted papacy. It's The Two Popes and John Patrick Shanley's Doubt meet Succession with a very slight tinge of Angels & Demons. Like if John Le Carré and Jesse Armstrong had a…"
New Life
"Sets the viewers off on a wild goose chase by subtle use of red herring and then leads right back into a familiar trope. Nevertheless made me paranoid enough to be concerned about Big Pharma, governments, security agencies and International institutions being together in the same bed."
Sing Sing
"How many emotions can somebody go through in a span of 90 minutes? This movie says all of them. Turns a revengeful retributive justice system into a transformative and rehabilitative one; not by taking a rebellious knife into its heart rather with the help of art, passion, self-love and a whole lot of remorse while showing both fairness and the injustice of it all. Colman Domingo's vulnerable performance with a wide smile plastered on his hardened countenance acts as the…"
